Snakes A snake is a scaly, limbless, elongate reptile from the order Squamata.
(Derived from the Latin word for "Scale") All snakes are carnivorous or
meat eaters.
Their diet includes many small animals: Lizards, rodents, birds, eggs, and
even other snakes!
As a group, they've come up with creative ways to secure their next meal.
Some snakes have
a venomous bite, which they use to kill their prey before eating it. Other
snakes kill their prey by
constriction. Still others just swallow their prey whole and alive. Despite
an almost universal fear
of snakes in humans, they don't normally go after people. Most will not
attack humans unless
startled or injured, preferring instead to avoid us. The majority of snakes
are either non-venomous
or possess venom that is not harmful to humans. Still, there are 45,000
snake bites reported
annually in the U.S. Of those about 7,000 are venomous bites. And unfortunately,
on an average
year 1-2 Texans die from venomous snake bites. Pit Vipers are the most common
venomous
snakes in Texas. They include the copperhead, cottonmouth and rattlesnake.
Coral snakes
are also found here. Don't mess with these guys! Call us instead!
