Bees are flying insects, closely related to wasps and ants. There are
about 20,000 known
species of bee, and you can find them on every continent except Antarctica.
The most well-known
bee species is the Western honey bee. Bees play an important role in pollinating
flowering plants.
It's estimated that one third of the human food supply depends on insect
pollination, most of this
accomplished by bees. Bees also play a major, though not always understood,
role in providing
food for birds and wildlife. Recently, many beekeepers have experienced
substantial losses, prompting
the announcement of investigation into the phenomenon, dubbed "Colony Collapse
Disorder." Africanized
bees, also called killer bees, are a hybrid strain derived from experiments
to cross European and
African honey bees. Several queen bees escaped a laboratory in South America
and have spread
throughout the Americas. Africanized honey bees are more aggressive and
defensive than European
honey bees. Bees can be serious pests. If they establish a hive in or near
your house, that increases
your chance of getting stung. Anything sweet attracts them: Syrup and soda
containers, fruit waste,
etc. Once they've moved into a wall or attic, they become much more defensive
and likely to sting.
Bee removal is a job for experts. Call us if you suspect a bee hive on your
property.
